How do you determine your weight for speed bench? A % of 1RM?

Yessir. We started with 50% and will increase from there.

What is the benefit of the speed bench?

Teaches you to accelerate the bar, helps power production, increases motor unit recruitment - whichever term you prefer.
Basically helps you lift more weight by using light weights moving fast.
Light weight moving fast is like heavy weight moving slow in some ways.

I thought of that but your problem isn't a power issue, it's a keeping your back in extension issue which those won't help with. It's an isometric contraction problem.
