Melanie, you are awesome! Remember when you couldn't even run a 400? And I hear you kind of kicked the last 1/4 mile of this run - still had gas in the tank huh??? You're my hero! You and Steve Prefontaine that is!

Give us an idea of your recent buildup to the 31:11 masterpiece. When recently did you start? What did you start with? What was the progression? etc.

Let me paint you a picture. I ran once in a blue moon on an off for years. Mostly off. I never ran more than two miles in my life.

More recently, for about two years, two years which ended it seems in April 08, my stupid hip was aching all the time. So badly that sometimes I limped. Then one day I went and played kickball at the park with the kids and afterwards was in truly horrible pain.

I went to a physical therapist and had it x-rayed too. They said if I did some exercises the pain would go away but I should give up on running altogether.

I started crossfitting in march, yada, yada, yada.

Went for a one mile run with Chris some time after that. He told me to slow down and helped my stride a bit. It took like 12 minutes, but I survived.

I started running around twice a week on my own, working up to two miles. I got under 10 minutes on the second mile once. That was about three months ago.

Then one day, against Chris's advice which was that I should only add 1/2 mile at a time, I tried to run three miles and I did. Times ranged between 35 minutes and 33 minutes.

Last week of course we had the thrilling 9 minute mile at the track.

And that brings us to this Sunday's 31:11 masterpiece as you so aptly call it.

My secrets:
Not going too fast too quickly
Keeping my iPod loud enough so I can't hear myself breathing
Running on an empty stomach
Avoiding the hot times of the day

Running three miles sounds like a lot of work and not a lot of fun. I'd tell you that you are awesome, but really, I don't want to encourage this kind of behavior (i.e. endurance running).
